Palmetto Parkway - Finishing the job in Aiken County

Project Status

As of April 2007 construction of Phase II of the Palmetto Parkway is well under way. At this point, permits that allow for clearing, grubbing, and earth disturbing activities have been acquired for work spanning from US-1 to immediately south of I-20. The contractors hope to be permitted for the entire project by mid-May or early June 2007. Further permits must be applied for later in the project in order to begin paving.

Construction has mandated that a number of detours be built in order to provide citizens with alternative driving routes until work is complete.

Latest Updates

October 2008

  • Traffic was shifted onto the new Ascauga Lake Road Bridge during the month of October. The concrete paving subcontractor has mobilized onto the project and it is expected that the actual placement of concrete will begin in early November. Work also continues at Clearwater Road and the widening of US-25 south of I-20. Work on the new I-20 ramps is currently underway in preparation for opening these ramps over the next couple of months.
  • The concrete decks for the south bound bridge over Atomic Road and the stage 1 portion of the US-25 Bridge over I-20 were both completed during October. Work continues on all three of the bridges that cross over I-20.

September 2008

  • The following road improvements are being made at the US 25 overpass of Interstate 20. All of these projects are an integral part of the construction of Phase 2 of the Palmetto Parkway in Aiken County.

    • US-25 is being widened to 6 lanes through the interchange.
    • The ramps and loops at this interchange are being replaced and realigned.
    • The US-25 bridges over I-20 are being replaced.
    • The frontage roads on the north side of I-20 are being realigned.
This work is being done while maintaining traffic and the shifts to the new alignments will be done in stages – yet many of the activities will require lane closures. It is anticipated that daytime lane closures will be needed several days a week for the next several months through January 2009.
  • The first major shift in traffic will be the opening of the new I-20 ramps and putting traffic on one-half of the new US-25 Bridge over I-20 (the portion currently under construction). These traffic shifts are expected to take place in late November or early December 2008.
  • In addition, other work in the area includes the construction of the I-520 (Palmetto Parkway) bridges over I-20. This work will continue to result in disruptions to traffic on I-20 over the next several months. Occasional lane closures will be required for some of the activities. Significant activities that will require momentary total road closures will be done at night.
